Iwi Representatives | Environment and Communities Committee - KCDC

Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki is seeking an Iwi Representative to join the Environment & Communities Committee with the Kāpiti Coast District Council.

This is a governance role focused on shaping decisions that impact the wellbeing of our communities, environment, and future generations.

You will help ensure that the voice of mana whenua is represented in discussions and decisions across key social, environmental, and community wellbeing areas.

The Iwi Representative will:-

  • Bring the perspective of Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki into Council decision-making

  • Contribute to plans and initiatives across community wellbeing and environmental areas

  • Support decisions relating to housing, health, education, and social resilience

  • Provide input into environmental and climate-related programmes

  • Advocate for kaupapa that impact our people and our rohe

  • Attendance at scheduled committee meetings

  • Reviewing agendas and reports in advance

  • Active participation in discussions and decision-making

Some meetings may occur outside standard working hours.

What we’re looking for:

  • A strong connection to Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki

  • The ability to represent and advocate for mana whenua perspectives

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • Strategic thinking and the ability to consider long-term impacts

  • An understanding of, or interest in, environmental and community issues

Experience in governance, policy, environment, or community development is an advantage but not essential.

Key Skills & Experiences Valued for this role

  • Understanding of community wellbeing and social issues

  • Knowledge or interest in environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity, or coastal resilience

  • Experience in policy, planning, or community development

  • Ability to work collaboratively with iwi, council, and community partners

  • Confidence in contributing to decision-making spaces
