The name Ōtaki is derived from the actions of Haunui-a-nanaia. Haunui traversed a considerable portion of the lower North Island in pursuit of his runaway wife. In doing so this elder gave names to numerous rivers he had to cross from Whanganui to Wairarapa. The naming of the rivers and the reason for the circumstances under which they were named is well recorded in traditional Māori narrative; hence Ōtaki is interpreted as “a place where Haunui stood to make a speech with his tokotoko.”

“takina te tokotoko ko Ōtaki”

In 1998, the five hapū of Ngāti Raukawa that sit within the Ōtaki rohe came together to exercise their rights as Kaitiaki over the Ōtaki river.  Together they challenged local council over the planned taking of water from the Ōtaki River and they’ve never looked back.

Raukawa Marae Management Committee is registered as a charitable entity under the Charities Act 2005.

Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki is the trading entity of “Raukawa Marae Management Committee”.
